- Essential Question
- How can schools create trusted reporting systems to reduce under-reported SRGBV and prevent future harm?
- Project Description
-
In our schools and communities, we have seen that many students experience bullying, harassment, and other forms of School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV), but very few feel safe enough to report it. Research shows that about 60% of young people experience violence before age 18 (UNICEF, 2015), and many are first exposed between ages 6–11, while SRGBV prevalence ranges from 23% to nearly 59% across education levels. When we learned this, we realized the problem is not only how common violence is, but how often it goes unreported due to fear, stigma, and lack of trusted systems.
Through the SRGBV School Safety Campaign, we decided to design solutions ourselves. We co-created mobile and web-based reporting apps using React and Expo, built low-bandwidth reporting options with Google Forms, and used Google Maps to identify safety hotspots in our schools. After analyzing the data, we designed safe-school signs and awareness materials in Canva to place in high-risk areas.
Our goal is not only to increase reporting but to create safer school environments where students feel heard, protected, and empowered. By combining coding, data, and design, we are turning technology into a tool for prevention and lasting positive change in our schools.
