- Essential Question
- How do we scale reusable pads so Yobe girls never miss school from menstruation
- Project Description
-
Last year our Ciena project (Students Rise pads peers and progress) showed reusable pads work well. We trained 500+ girls in Damaturu schools, made 850 pads by hand, did radio talks in Hausa/English/Kanuri, ran peer circles, and set up safe spaces where girls could talk freely about periods. This cut stigma a lot.
But demand grew fast and hand-making of the reusable sanitary pads couldn't keep up. Some communities were slow to try reusable pads at first. When the grant ended, our students said we must do more. So we built our own pads production room—not part of the first plan. We got NAFDAC approval, tested all pads (100% passed), and started using industrial sewing machines.
Phase II takes these real results further to help more Yobe schools. Girls miss less class, learn skills, and speak openly. Simple steps from what we learned.
