Big Idea
Disaster Awareness and School Safety
Essential Question
How can students identify disaster risks in their school environment and develop practical solutions to make their school safer?
Project Description

Disaster Detectives: Hunting Risks at School is a Challenge Based Learning (CBL) project designed to increase students’ disaster awareness and help them develop practical solutions to improve school safety. The project focuses on identifying disaster risks within the school environment and empowering students to actively contribute to creating safer learning spaces.

In the Engage phase, students explore the big idea of disaster awareness and school safety. Through discussion and essential questioning, they consider how disasters such as earthquakes, fires, or unsafe conditions could affect their school. This process leads to the essential question: How can students identify disaster risks in their school and develop solutions to make it safer? Students then define a clear challenge: investigating their school to detect possible safety risks.

During the Investigate phase, students work in teams to examine different areas of the school such as corridors, classrooms, and outdoor spaces. Using guiding questions, they identify hazards, analyze why they are dangerous, and research possible prevention strategies. Their observations are documented using disaster detective forms and photographs.

In the Act phase, students transform their findings into practical solutions such as safety recommendations, awareness materials, and risk-reduction suggestions.
