Essential Question
“How can accessible, safe, and sustainable transportation be ensured for disadvantaged groups, using AI and innovative solutions to promote equality?
Project Description

The Smart Elevator Access Project (SEAP) aims to prevent the misuse of pedestrian overpass elevators and to ensure safe access for disadvantaged groups. Elevators are of vital importance to the elderly, people with disabilities, and parents with strollers; however, irresponsible use frequently leads to malfunctions, rendering them inaccessible to those who truly need them. Our project grants access solely to authorized users by utilizing cameras installed on elevator doors in conjunction with AI-based facial recognition technology. This approach simultaneously enhances security and reduces maintenance costs. Students trained the AI using Pictoblox and the Machine Learning Environment extension, and subsequently developed a prototype utilizing an Arduino Uno and servo motors. Throughout this process, they acquired 21st-century skills through project-based learning, learned how to apply AI ethically, and strengthened their awareness of social equity. The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Our ultimate objective is to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged individuals and to provide innovative solutions for creating accessible cities.
