- Big Idea
- Safe navigation for visually impaired
- Essential Question
- How can technology enable blind people to move safely and independently in urban environments without relying on constant human assistance?
- Project Description
-
RUNA is a navigation assistant for people with visual impairments that combines computer vision, sound analysis, and AI-powered navigation. Our project addresses the challenge of unsafe urban mobility for the blind, which often leads to accidents, injuries, or dependence on others for guidance. We have developed a prototype mobile app and tested obstacle detection and route guidance with a small group of users. Alongside the app, we are prototyping wearable devices like smart pendants and glasses to enhance real-time environmental awareness. So far, we have gathered user feedback, conducted interviews, and refined the interface for voice guidance in Russian and Kazakh. Our solution empowers users to travel independently while ensuring safety, accessibility, and confidence in urban spaces.
