- Project Description

Our project addresses the growing problem of unmanaged waste and poor recycling practices during large social gatherings such as sports events, weddings, and conferences. At many events, stationary trash bins are often ignored, become overfilled, or are located far from people. As a result, waste is frequently thrown on the ground or mixed incorrectly in one bin, making recycling difficult or impossible.
To address this challenge, we developed The Automated Bin, a mobile robotic waste collection system that proactively moves through crowds to collect trash. Instead of waiting for people to find a bin, the Automated Bin moves toward people when they need to dispose of waste.
Using robotics concepts and sensors, the bin navigates through event spaces using programmed movement and obstacle detection. When a person approaches the robot, it stops and allows time for waste disposal before continuing its route. The robot also separates waste into different compartments for metals, plastics, and organic materials to improve recycling efficiency.
This solution encourages responsible waste disposal, increases recycling rates, and reduces littering at public events. Our project demonstrates how robotics and smart technology can support cleaner environments and promote sustainable waste management practices
