Our Operation Grow Inc. project is the creation of a community garden to grow over 75 healthy fruits and vegetables for the East Orange community. We have found that our city is a Food Desert. We have been researching and learning about Food Sovereignty and we are planning to share information with others around us, by hosting events and activities that will teach residents about healthy eating, taking care of the environment, and growing healthy foods. We are Creating a Food Desert Oasis to Water a Food Desert because there is only one garden in the city of East Orange and the community is not fully engaged enough to make effective impact for the people. Our major challenges are that the city officials have not provided the residents with an Environmental Commission, an Office of Sustainability, nor an active Sustainable Jersey Green Team, which puts the residents at a disadvantage. We are upscaling our project to host community workshops on gardening, nutrition, Environmental Stewardship, and sustainable living.
