- Big Idea
- Solving EKY's Food Desert
- Essential Question
- There is a lack of agriculture in EKY, however culturally people grow their own food. How can we help everyone?
- Project Description
-
Eastern Kentucky is a food desert. We have to import food that is grown from other parts of KY or other states all together. Generally speaking, roughly half of the nutritional value of food is lost after it is picked. If we need to import food, the quality of it can vary depending on the time frame of when it is picked to when it is bought at the store by the consumer.
We face geological problems such as terrain that is not flat and terrible roads that limit opportunities of imports and exports. Economically, this causes problems for us as it limits the opportunity of agriculture careers and flat plots of land are typically reserved for businesses. There is a need for agriculture here in EKY.
Our project is about solving this problem and not only providing food for our own part of the state but also providing jobs in the agriculture field varying from farming to coal miners with CDLs that lost their jobs being able to export and import food. The solution we have come up with is hydroponics. Hydroponics is the ability to grow food without soil. No large plot of land is needed.
